Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about EPA IDs and the RCRA Handler ID system.

What is an EPA ID (RCRA Handler ID)?

An EPA ID (formally called a RCRA Handler ID) is a unique 12-character identifier assigned to every facility that generates, transports, treats, stores, or disposes of hazardous waste under RCRA. The first two characters represent the state abbreviation (e.g., TX, CA). Facilities must include this ID on manifests, biennial reports, and regulatory submissions.

How do I look up an EPA ID by company name?

Use the "Facility Name" tab above. Enter any portion of the company or facility name and the tool searches the full EPA ECHO database. Partial matches work, so you don't need the exact registered name. Add a state filter if you know the location to narrow results. This is the fastest way to do an EPA ID lookup by company name when you don't have the 12-character handler ID on hand.

How do I get an EPA ID for my facility?

To obtain an EPA ID, you must complete EPA Form 8700-12 (the RCRA Site Identification Form) and submit it to your state environmental agency. New generators must notify the EPA before beginning hazardous waste operations. Many states now accept electronic submissions via RCRAInfo.

What does "Active" vs "Inactive" status mean?

"Active" indicates the facility is currently registered and has reported recent hazardous waste activity. "Inactive" means the facility has not submitted recent notifications or the registration has lapsed. Note that "Inactive" does not indicate compliance; it may reflect unreported activities or a facility that has ceased waste generation.

What does the compliance status show?

Compliance status is sourced from EPA ECHO and reflects the facility's RCRA enforcement history. "No Violation Identified" means no formal violations are recorded. "Violation" indicates open enforcement actions or identified non-compliance in the ECHO database. Always verify with your state environmental agency for the current enforcement posture.

How is this different from searching EPA ECHO directly?

EPA ECHO's built-in facility search requires navigating several filter dropdowns across multiple pages before returning results. This tool takes a single input and returns matching facilities in under a second, including handler ID, generator status, and compliance history on one screen. The data source is the same (EPA ECHO), but the lookup is faster and works on mobile without the layout issues the government site has on smaller screens.

Can a facility have multiple EPA IDs?

Yes. A facility may accumulate multiple RCRA IDs over time. For example, it might be re-notified after a status change, or it could have separate IDs for different regulatory programs (e.g., state-issued vs. federally-issued). The "All RCRA IDs on Record" field shows all identifiers linked to a given facility in the EPA registry.

From lookup to compliance: close the loop

Once you have the EPA ID, the hard part is staying compliant. RCRAReady helps track container deadlines, shipment follow-up, and inspection records from one place.
